Josep Guinovart

Barcelona, 1927.

Painter and engraver, protagonist of the Catalan pictorial avant-garde in the second half of the 20th century, together with Antoni Tàpies, Joan Josep Tharrats and Joan Hernández Pijoan. Starting from an initial figurative stage, Guinovart's work drifts towards large-format social themes. In 1957, influenced by the abstract movement and informalism, a new three-dimensional perspective with the integration of objects and the treatment of matter emerged within his creative aesthetic. His works, plastic expressions of fertile chromatism, clinging to the field and the land, generate a poetic dialogue between signs and suggestive gestures. In 1982 he was awarded the National Prize of Plastic Arts and in 1990 he was awarded by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
