María José Castaño

Burgos, 1966.

Graduate in Fine Arts, specialising in Painting. Complutense University of Madrid, 1991. Her childhood and youth was spent between Cascajares de la Sierra and Bilbao. After her studies in Madrid, she returned to Burgos, where she set up her workshop in one of the former industrial buildings of her father's company.

A constant feature of his work from the beginning of his career are the landscapes, especially those of the Arlanza Valley, with recurrent locations such as the Guijarrón peak, the Pedroso river or the monasteries of San Pedro de Arlanza and Santo Domingo de Silos. He has also painted landscapes of the different places he has visited or where he has lived, such as China (where he used supports and pigments typical of that country's tradition), Italy, Cuba, New York, the Cantabrian Sea, the Atacama desert or the Canary Island of La Graciosa. The Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos commissioned him to create an altarpiece with the Benedictine martyrs belonging to the monastery who were shot during the Spanish Civil War.
