Xurxo Alonso
Buenos Aires (Argentina), 1956
Although born in South America, he is Galician, because of his family ancestry and because from the age of eight he lives in Vilagarcía de Arousa. Initially he follows other paths, since he attains a degree in Biology from the University of Compostela, although his passion for painting ends up prevailing. The trade began at the Maestro Mateo de Santiago School of Arts, and I continue it at the Actual Art Workshops in Madrid, near such notable painters as Guinovart and Alcorlo; in San Sebastián, with Bonifacio Alonso and again in Madrid with McLean. He was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación de Pontevedra at the IX International Biennial of Art and by the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation of Granada. His first exhibitions date from 1983, in the city of his residence. The individual has extended them throughout Galicia, Spain and Mexico, and has participated in numerous collectives, in some of which won important awards, since the II Contest of new artists, in Vigo, in 1983, to others in different cities of Galicia and from Spain. His work has the Galician Center for Contemporary Art, in Compostela, the museums of Burgos, Sada, etc., and the council and town halls of a good number of Spanish cities. Xurxo Alonso is, fundamentally, a landscaper, with an intensely abstract condition and ways that begin in conceptual constructivism, which are sometimes related to Molezún or Jorge Castillo. The urban geography of New York has had considerable influence in its painting. The concise volumes, which he simplifies further, constitute the reference, in blues, pinks, grays, for a deliberately elementary expression of considerable beauty. Sometimes it goes into neutral ranges and the references are diluted or lost, to be delivered to a stiff stain, broad brushstrokes, blacks and ocher in which suddenly emerges a very lyrical blue, to insinuate the motley of a megalopolis and the very vague reference of a very firm horizontal structure nature, in wide planes. Very gifted artist, he shows an excellent job in the loose, light execution, of light or motley brushstroke, in which the outline of the drawing, schematic and very safe, of these landscapes that are spectral, almost purely chromatic visions, is implied. of a complex reality, so peculiarly simplified.
Since 1964 he lives in Vilagarcía de Arousa (Pontevedra).
