Joan Hernández Pijuan
Barcelona, Spain, 1931-2005
He was born in 1931 and he died on 2005. In 1953 he made his first exhibition showing an expressionist style and with existential resonance. The Municipal Museum of Mataró hosted its first solo exhibition in 1955 and shortly afterwards was one of the founders of the "Silex Group" together with Carles Planell, Eduard Alcoy and Lázaro and Josep Maria Rovira and Requesón. In 1957 he moved to Paris where He studied engraving and lithography at the School of Fine Arts, adopting a geometric figuration where solitary elements (fruit, cups, eggs, clouds, etc.) stand out on backgrounds and plain fields of shades of gray and green colors including mathematical elements such as grids, they suggest a magical atmosphere. Until the mid-eighties does not return to Informalism. His work begins to be characterized by the use of a palette of only black and white.
